Dove Schools are high performing, tuition-free, PreK-12 public charter schools in Oklahoma that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics. Dove Schools proudly serve over 3,000 students at nine college-preparatory campuses across the state. “At Dove, the first year, gets a mixing pot of a bunch of different people from all over the state all looking for the one thing: to better themselves. It's fun, it's challenging; it’s just a great place to be around. “The people here treat each other like family. It's a very close bond with all of the students and staff and teachers, so I really appreciate that it's a safe place to explore education without being judged for.” “Dove is like a second house for us. It's like a family, after 7 years. They have an open door policy – you have any questions, they are always there for you. It doesn't matter if it's a weekend or if it's after hours. It’s incredible that they're there for you. “The people at Dove were very approachable I never felt that I couldn't call them and I like the fact that they reach out to me; they don't wait until the child's and so much trouble that it’s irreversible. “They encourage us by like having very in-depth topics and lessons, and my teachers pay attention to our need, and my friends are very friendly because if you're having an off-day they will help you.” “They learn that the teacher cares about them – they also care. They feel important because they are important. They know that we believe in them so they're willing to do the work for it.” “The fact that Dove has a character education program: I think that is one of the things that sets Dove apart.” “Character Ed shows us these ways where we can build relationships and have fun with each other. And it shows us what it's like to be in other people's shoes.” “Our schools are characters schools, so we focus on that. And it's very important for them when they graduate from high school and go to the real world that having that character helps them in all aspects of life. “Every time we've figured out how to do a certain mission it's just exhilarating, when everyone is all happy and everyone's congratulating each other, that’s one of my favorite parts. it's all good and fun because at the end of the day if we just strengthened our friendship” “The little one: when I brought him here there was a big difference. He changed a lot. Now if you ask him why he wants to be, he says I want to be President. And that is a huge difference. I can tell that he's in the right place.” “I noticed that in the atmosphere of Dove Science Academy, you get to build relationships with your peers. For example we've been in the same class since 6th grade. So we know each other very well. We know all the pros and cons and how we can benefit each other; our weaknesses and strengths. And it's really cool because once we graduate we really made a good network of connections. So at Dove you do create lifelong friends.” “STEM is science technology engineering math. And course engineering and math is what I'm trying to advance in. And therefore this school who offers all the opportunities really helps me and benefits me from this.” “Almost every industry you look now is affected by computer science. At some point of your career you’re going to have to deal with computers, so that's why it's very important to expose them from very young age so when they get to college and have explored more they have that foundational knowledge.” “So just in my class we have like two people from Guatemala, ten kids from Mexico, a couple German kids, and I myself am from Panama, she's from a Vietnam – yeah and every single class is like that, just people from all over the place. And they all come together for the same thing: to become better educated.” With a college acceptance rate of 100%, Dove Schools have earned the reputation of providing a distinct, high-quality education. “At Dove they emphasize Life 101: how to network, how to get into your first job, stuff like that. I want to be a cosmetic chemist and the guidance counselor here has helped me narrow down my choices of which college to go to. For example the University of Toledo and the University of Oklahoma I found out both have the bachelor's program for cosmetic science. They’re telling me to set up a LinkedIn profile, how to network with professors, how to do cold emails, how to do independent research. So I've been able to network with current cosmetic chemists to get my foot into the industry.” Research shows that “home visits” can increase student performance, Jumpstart parent involvement, reduce discipline problems, and increase overall positive attitudes toward school. “We believe in parent-teacher-student connections. So we want the parents as a partner. We want them to know that we are on the same team, we want their students to succeed just like they do. We want them to grow. When we arrange those, we call the parents usually and we say hey we would like to do this. It's usually short – about 20 minute visit – and the kids are always super proud. They want to show us their stuff, they want to show us their pets, they want to show us everything about them. The students are always changed. The next day after we meet, they're more open and they're kind of comfortable, and they're excited to be there, and they know that we care. And it can also help with students who are struggling maybe with behavior, because they know that me and their parents are on the same page and that I have no problem giving the parent a call and talking to them. We've got that type of relationship which is really helpful and beneficial for the student.” “If you're looking for what is best for your kid you need to look at the school. It’s great. I mean, it’s going to be great for your kid.” “It’s just a great opportunity to meet people with the same mindset: that want to improve themselves, and their education. And due to the community, the friends, the family you make, and all the opportunities: there's really no other school like that.” For more information visit doveschools.org
